If born before 20 August 1986

If you were born in Australia before 20 August 1986, you will be required to present your Australian birth certificate.

If born on or after 20 August 1986

If you were born in Australia on or after 20 August 1986, you will also need to provide proof that at least one parent was an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of your birth.

If you have been naturalized

If you have been naturalized, you will be required to provide an original citizenship certificate. If you do not have or have lost your citizenship certificate, you will be required to obtain a Certificate of Evidence of Australian Citizenship. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade cannot provide any information to you about your citizenship status.

If lodging a Passport Renewal form

Passport applicants using the streamlined passport renewal process must present the passport that is being replaced
