The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issues passports, both in Australia and overseas, to be used as evidence of identity and citizenship by Australians who are travelling internationally, in accordance with the provisions of the Australian Passports Act 2005 and other legislation.

  • NEW APPLICATION FORMS COMING. PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION CAREFULLY. New passport application forms will be introduced on 1 July 2008. Old forms can continue to be used until 30 September 2008 but after this date only new forms will be accepted by the Australian Passport Office. Australians in possession of a valid Australian passport or passport that has expired less than 12 months are encouraged to use the streamlined renewal process. Use this website or telephone 131 232 to obtain a preprinted renewal form. The only supporting documentation required to lodge a renewal form is the passport being replaced. Where the renewal option is allowed to lapse, the new full passport application form will require the applicant to provide the original of either their full Australian birth certificate or Australian citizenship in support of their application. With the exception of the renewal process, a previous Australian passport cannot be used with the new passport application forms.


  • PHOTO ATTACHMENT on ONLINE PASSPORT APPLICATION FORMS - Please do not attach photographs to internet generated application forms prior to lodgement.


  • CURRENT AUSTRALIAN PASSPORTS DAMAGED OR DESTROYED: as a result of FLOODS IN NORTHERN NSW AND REGIONS OF QUEENSLAND from 1 December 2007 to 29 February 2008 will be replaced free of passport application fees until 8 February 2009. Gratis passports will be issued with the same expiry date as the passport being replaced. Applicants should contact the Australian Passport Information Service (APIS) on 13 12 32 for information on applying for a gratis replacement passport.


  • PROOF OF PLACE OF BIRTH, GENDER AND CITIZENSHIP CERTIFICATES: A document which proves your place of birth, and gender MUST be provided for all full passport applications. This information is a requirement under the Australian Passports Amendment Determination 2007 (1). Applicants presenting a citizenship certificate that does not record place of birth or gender should contact the Australian Passport Information Service (APIS) on 13 12 32 for information on acceptable, alternative documents.
