Online application account

The  online application requires you to create an account before using its services.

Create an account

To create an account you must:

  • confirm you are aged 18 or over
  • accept the terms and conditions of use
  • provide personal details (using the name to be displayed on your passport)
  • provide an email address*
  • set a password and secret questions and answers to assist with self-service password resets.

Once you have completed the steps above, an email will be sent to your email address with a link to verify and activate your account. 

*An email address can only be used to create one account.

Verifying your email address

You must verify your email address before midnight AEST of the following calendar day after receiving the verification email before you can access this service. 

If you do not verify your email address within this timeframe, your account and all personal information supplied during creation of the account will be deleted and you will be required to create a new account. 

Setting a password

It is your responsibility to protect your account details and set a password that complies with the Australian Passport Office's security requirements.

Your password must be:

  • Minimum length of 10 characters
  • No spaces allowed
  • At least three of the following character sets must be present
  • lowercase alphabetic characters (a-z)
  • uppercase alphabetic characters (A-Z)
  • numeric characters (0-9)
  • special characters (#?!@$%^&*->./\`~{}[])

Choosing Secret Questions

You need to choose 3 secret questions that only you can answer, by selecting from the drop down list and providing answers for them.  Answers are not case sensitive .

Secret questions will be used to assist you to reset your password if needed.

Use of your account

Your account can be used to:

  • start, save, resume, update, save and delete a passport application
  • monitor the progress of your passport application;
  • update your account details; and
  • change your password.

If at any time you believe your account may have been compromised, immediately contact the Australian Passport Information Service on 131 232.   

Locked out of your account?

If you enter the wrong email address or password 3 times in a row, your account will be temporarily locked for 5 minutes after which time, you will be able to try logging in again.

Changing your password

To change your password once you have logged in, select 'Change password' from the 'My passport applications' page.

Forgotten your password?

If you have forgotten your password, select 'Forgot your password?' to verify yourself and change your password.  After you have entered your registered email address, you will be prompted to answer 1 secret question from the three questions and answers you set up when you created your account. 

You will have 3 attempts to correctly answer one of the 3 secret questions established during your account creation.  

If you have 3 unsuccessful attempts to answer the secret question, your account will be locked and can only be reset by contacting the Australian Passport Information Service on 131 232. 

Once a question is successfully answered, an email will be sent to your email address with a link to set a new password. 

Delete your account

To delete your account call the Australian Passport Information Service on 131 232.

Report a security breach of your online account

If you think that the security of your account may have been compromised (for example, if your security details have been, or may be, access by another person without your permission) report the breach to Australian Passport Information Service 131 232 as soon as possible.

You may be required to provide APIS with the following information:

  • When you believe your account was compromised and why you believe it has been compromised;
  • Your last access to your account;
  • Whether you have provided your Security details (online username or password) to someone else.
