Australians should be aware of passport scams that request people to scan and email their passport details, or to apply for a new passport at no cost because of a security breach. These scams are attempts by scammers to trick you into giving out personal information and in some cases money. The department will never ask you to email a photo or a scan of your passport to renew your passport or request money by email. If you receive a passport scam email or something that you suspect may be a passport scam email:
- do NOT send any personal details or money or bank account details in response
- tell the department straight away.
