Recent airline data breach

31 October 2018

Passports are an important part of proving your identity.  The information used by travel agents and airlines is based on some of the information on the bio-page (photo page) of your passport.

If someone had access to your passport number and name, these details in themselves would be insufficient to obtain another passport in your identity.  DFAT has a range of robust controls in place to ensure that Australian travel documents are only issued to individuals with an entitlement, including sophisticated facial recognition technology.

If you believe your identity has been compromised please contact IDcare or the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN). These sites will provide information on cyber security and keeping your identity safe. The Attorney General’s department have information in relation to protecting your identity and what to do if your identity has been stolen.

If you still feel unsure, you can renew your passport at any time. Your new passport will have a new passport number but you will need to pay the current renewal fee.
