How long to get a passport
Whether you apply in Australia or overseas, it will take approximately three weeks to get a new passport.
You can help minimise processing time by ensuring that when you lodge your application you provide all the information required.
Child passport applications that do not include full parental consent take longer to process. Normal turnaround times do not apply.
Unless you make arrangements to collect your passport, we will post it to you by registered mail.
If you apply online, you may be able to nominate a delivery address that's different from your residential address, including a PO Box.
Please note, however, you cannot select a parcel locker address to have your passport delivered to.
Depending on your location, it may take up to one week to arrive.
If you are collecting your passport, you will need to bring photo ID.
If you are collecting on behalf of someone else, you must have a signed letter of authority.
If you are overseas, contact the Australian diplomatic or consular mission where you lodged your application for information about your passport delivery. If you are collecting your passport, check with the mission whether you need an appointment.
If you are concerned that your passport delivery is late, please call the Australian Passport Information Service on 131 232 and ask for the registered letter number assigned to your passport. You can then use this number to track the location of your passport on the Australia Post website.
You must report your passport missing if you do not receive it within 60 days of its dispatch.
Our priority processing service guarantees that your passport will be produced within two business days of us receiving everything we need from you. You should allow extra time for your application to reach a passport office after lodgement, and for your passport to be sent to you by registered mail. Alternatively, you can collect it in person.
The priority processing service is available for passport applications and renewals lodged in Australia or at the Australian High Commission in London. The service is not available for child passport applications lacking full parental consent or if you have had two or more travel documents lost or stolen in the last five years.
If you are applying overseas and cannot wait the standard three weeks to receive your new passport, you should contact the nearest Australian diplomatic mission or consulate for advice.
