You can help minimise processing time by ensuring when you lodge your application you provide everything we need.

What does it cost?

An ordinary passport, valid for ten years, costs $254. Persons aged 75 and over can choose to apply for a five-year passport for half the cost ($127).

The priority processing fee is $127.

Other fees may apply.

1. Complete the application form

Start your application online and print it for lodgment. Alternatively, you can collect a blank application form from an Australia Post passport agency.

2. Collect all your citizenship and identity documents

To qualify for a passport, you need to confirm your Australian citizenship and prove your personal identity, using original documents.

You must present your full Australian birth certificate or Australian citizenship certificate when you lodge your application.

If you were born in Australia on or after 20 August 1986, you must present your full birth certificate and additional documents as evidence of your Australian citizenship

In addition, you must bring supporting identity documents that show your photo and your current residential address.

3. Obtain passport photos

You need to provide two identical colour photos that are no more than six months old. The photos must meet particular requirements. We recommend  you check the requirements before you have your photos taken and ensure the person taking the photos understands these requirements.   Please do not attach the photos to your application form as this can damage them if not attached correctly.

Your guarantor must be an Australian citizen aged 18 or older, who has known you for at least 12 months.

5. Lodge your passport application in person

You must lodge your application in person. Remember to take along your original identity documents, which will be sighted and returned to you at the time, your endorsed photos, and the means to pay the fee(s).
