Unless you qualify for streamlined renewal of a previous passport, you’ll generally need:
- your full birth certificate
- evidence that you’re an Australian citizen
- identity documents with your photo, signature and current address
- documents that prove any change of name or change of gender.
You’ll need details from these documents to complete your application.
You’ll also need to bring the documents when you lodge your application. We’ll return the documents to you on the spot. Don’t bring copies – we only accept originals.
Unless you qualify for streamlined renewal of a previous passport, you’ll need a referee or a guarantor.
If you use our online service and apply in Australia, you nominate a referee. In other situations, you nominate a guarantor.
- A referee (for online applications in Australia) doesn’t need to sign anything, but must be willing to confirm your identity if we contact them.
- A guarantor (in other situations) has to sign section 11 of your application form and endorse the back of a passport photo by writing 'This is a true photo of (your full name)' and signing in black pen.
Your referee or guarantor:
- must be an adult Australian citizen who has known you for more than a year
- cannot be any kind of relative, or in a de facto relationship with you, or living at the same address as you.
For your application, you’ll need your referee’s or guarantor’s full name, their phone number, and either their current Australian passport details or the address at which they’ve been on the electoral roll for the past 12 months.
If you’re applying overseas, your guarantor can be someone with a current Australian passport, or a person of any nationality who’s employed in an approved occupational group. To find out about approved occupational groups, check with the Australian diplomatic or consular mission where you’ll be lodging the application.
Going online is the easiest way to do this. Our system guides you through the questions to help you get the answers right. More than 70 per cent of passport applicants use our online service.
If going online is not an option for you, just ask for a blank application form at a participating Australia Post outlet or an Australian diplomatic or consular mission. For streamlined renewal without going online, call us on 131 232 or contact an Australian diplomatic or consular mission. We’ll confirm that you qualify, and send you a pre-filled form by mail or by email.

When your passport is ready, we’ll send you an email.
Allow about three weeks to receive your passport after you lodge the application.
