Processing times

This page covers expected timeframes to get your passport. It covers processing times for:

Passport timeframes as at May 2025

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS AVAILABLE WITHIN 6 WEEKS*
Above 99%

*The 6-week period begins when you lodge and pay for your application. ‘Available’ means your travel document has either been delivered (or delivery has been attempted), or we've advised you the document is available for collection.

Complex applications, such as child applications without full parental consent, are not included in this timeframe. These applications can take longer to process.

If you need your passport urgently for compassionate or compelling reasons:

  • Make an appointment at your nearest passport office by calling 131 232
  • Provide evidence of a compassionate or compelling need for immediate travel
  • Pay the Priority (2-day processing) fee, if required.

We can’t provide a timeframe to process child passports lodged without full parental consent because these applications are referred to a specialised team for assessment.

Where possible, you should attempt to obtain consent from each person with parental responsibility.

See our incomplete consent page for more information.
