Not all applications are eligible for faster processing.
Compassionate or compelling need for urgent travel
There may be exceptional circumstances that require you to travel urgently.
These can include:
- the death, serious illness or injury of an immediate family member
- personal carer obligations
- an urgent business commitment or meeting
- unforeseen circumstances that require you to attend in person.
If you need your passport urgently for a compassionate or compelling reason:
- call us on 131 232 and make an appointment at your nearest passport office
- provide evidence of a compassionate or compelling need for immediate travel
- pay the Priority (2-day processing) service fee, if required.
Passport offices do not accept cash. You can pay by EFTPOS, MasterCard or Visa only.
Faster processing
If you need your passport quicker, you may be eligible for faster processing for an additional fee.
There are 2 options for faster processing:
1. Priority service (2-day processing)
Our Priority service costs $300 in addition to the standard passport application fee. Your passport will be processed in 2 business days after we receive your completed application, including all supporting documentation.
2. Fast Track service (5-day processing)
Our Fast Track service costs $104 in addition to the standard passport application fee. Your passport will be processed in 5 business days after we receive your completed application, including all supporting documentation.

To get your passport sooner, you can choose to collect it from your nearest passport office. You can’t collect your passport from a post office.
You’ll need to request to collect your passport when you lodge your application. Only under exceptional circumstances can you request to collect after lodgement.
Eligibility for faster processing
Priority and Fast Track processing services are only available to eligible customers in Australia.
You’re not eligible for faster processing if:
- you're applying for a passport from outside Australia
- you have difficulties proving your identity
- you’re applying for a child passport without full parental consent
- you’ve had 2 or more passports lost or stolen in the last 5 years.

Applying for faster processing
To choose a faster processing service, you need to pay the Priority or Fast Track processing fee in addition to the application fee when you lodge your application at a participating post office(Opens in a new tab/window).
If you’ve already lodged your application under our Routine processing service, contact us to request the Priority or Fast Track service.
Australia Post Passport RAPID service
To get your application to us faster, you can also lodge your application and pay the additional fee at a selected Australia Post Passport RAPID location.
If you lodge your application before 12:00 pm on any business day, we'll receive it the same day.
If you lodge it after 12:00 pm or on a weekend, we'll receive it the next business day.
