Child – quick guide to applying for a passport

How long does it take?

You should allow approximately three weeks to receive a new passport for your child. However, if full consent cannot be provided with the application, processing will take longer, generally six to eight weeks.

You can help minimise processing time by ensuring you provide everything we need when you lodge the child's application.

If you need a passport in a hurry, and can provide full consent, you can use our priority processing service for an extra fee. With priority service, the turnaround time includes two business days for our processing and additional time for delivery and handling.  Priority service cannot be provided for children's applications unless full parental consent has been given.

The application process

  1. Complete the application form
  2. Collect all documents necessary to prove the child's citizenship and identity
  3. Get the child's passport photos
  4. Choose a guarantor to sign the form and the photos
  5. Lodge the application form in person
  6. Allow approximately 3 weeks to receive the child's new passport, and longer if full consent cannot be provided

Complete the application form

Start the application online and print it for lodgement. Alternatively, you can collect a blank application form from an Australia Post passport agency.

Unless there are special circumstances, a child's passport can only be issued with written consent from all those with parental responsibility or an Australian court order permitting the child to have an Australian travel document, to enable them to travel internationally, or live or spend time with a person outside Australia. You need to include the relevant details in the application form.  This website has further information about children's passports.

Collect all documents necessary to prove the child's citizenship and identity

For the child to qualify for a passport, you need to confirm their Australian citizenship and prove their identity, using original documents.

If your child was born in Australia, you must present their full Australian birth certificate when you lodge their application, together with additional documentation to prove their Australian citizenship.

If the child was born outside Australia, you must present their Australian citizenship certificate when you lodge their application, as well as their foreign birth certificate.

In addition, the person with parental responsibility who lodges the child's application must bring supporting identity documents that show their photo and current residential address.

Obtain passport photos

You need to provide two identical colour photos of the child. The photos must be no more than six months old. The images must meet particular requirements. We recommend that you check the requirements before having the child's photos taken.  Please do not attach the photos to your application form as this can damage them if not attached correctly.

Choose a guarantor to endorse the child's application form and one of their photos.

The guarantor must be an Australian citizen aged 18 or older, who has known the child for at least 12 months or since birth.

Lodge the child's passport application in person

The child's passport application must be lodged in person by a parent or somebody with parental responsibility for the child. You cannot apply for a child’s passport in Australia if the child is located overseas.

Remember to take along the child's original identity documents, which will be sighted and returned to you at the time, endorsed photos of the child, the means to pay the fee(s), and your own photographic identification. Child applicants aged 16 or 17 must accompany their parent to lodge their passport application.

Lodge the application at a participating Australia Post passport outlet. You may need to book an appointment.
