How do I renew my passport?
The best way is to apply online.
The online application will validate your previous passport details and determine if you are eligible for our streamlined renewal process.
If you are eligible, you will only need to print and sign the form and bring it along with two new photos and your previous passport to lodge your application. Your previous passport will be physically cancelled when you lodge.
The photos must meet some requirements to be acceptable. Please do not attach the photos to your form as this can damage them. Your lodgement officer will attach them for you.
You must lodge your application in person at a participating Australia Post outlet or, if you are overseas, at your nearest Australian diplomatic mission or consulate.
What if I can’t apply online?
If you think you are eligible for our streamlined renewal process (see below), you can call the Australian Passport Information Service (APIS) on 131 232. APIS will validate your details against the passport database. If you are eligible, they will post or email a pre-filled renewal form for you to lodge. Calling outside of peak times (0900 to 1500) will reduce your wait time.
Can I collect a paper form at Australia Post?
Yes, however streamlined renewal is not possible using the paper form. For security and privacy reasons, Australia Post has no access to the passport database. Australia Post can’t validate your details and offer pre-filled renewal forms.
To complete the paper form you will need your original birth certificate and other original documents to establish your identity and citizenship. You will also need a suitable guarantor to endorse one of your photos and complete part of the form.
Am I eligible for the streamlined renewal process?
You are eligible for the streamlined renewal process if you are an Australian citizen aged 18 years or older, and you have and can present your most recent Australian passport that:
- was issued when you were 16 years of age or older, and
- was valid for at least two years when issued, and
- was issued in your current name, date of birth, place of birth and sex, and
- is current or expired less than three years ago, and
- was not cancelled (for example, was not reported lost or stolen).
