AusPassport account

You will need to create an AusPassport account before you begin your online application.

Create an AusPassport account

To create an account you must:

  • confirm you are aged 18 or over
  • accept the terms and conditions of use
  • provide personal details (including your legal name as it will be displayed on your passport)
  • provide an email address*
  • set a password and secret questions and answers to assist with self-service password resets.

Once you have completed the steps above, you’ll receive an email with a link to verify and activate your account.

*An email address can only be used to create one account.

Verifying your email address

If you don’t verify your email address before midnight AEST of the following calendar day after creating your account, your account will be deleted, and you’ll need to start again.

Setting a password

To protect your personal information, we have security requirements.

Your password must have at least 14 characters and include three of the following:

  • lowercase letter (a-z)
  • uppercase letter (A-Z)
  • number (0-9)
  • special characters (#?!@$%^&*->./\`~{}[])

Your password can’t start with a hash (#) and it can’t have any spaces.

Resetting your password

To reset your password, follow these steps:

  • at the login screen, click the ‘reset password’ link
  • enter the email address that you use to login to your AusPassport account
  • we will send you an email with a reset password link
  • you will be asked to answer one of your secret questions
  • choose a new password using a minimum of 14 characters.

Choosing secret questions

You’ll be asked to choose three secret questions that only you can answer, by selecting from the drop-down list and providing answers for them. Answers are not case sensitive.

You can use these secret questions to reset your password if you forget it.

Use of your AusPassport account

Your account can be used to:

  • prepare your passport application
  • monitor the progress of your passport application
  • update your account details
  • change your password.

If you think your account has been compromised, call us immediately on 131 232.

Locked out of your AusPassport account?

If you enter the wrong email address or password three times in a row, your account will be temporarily locked for five minutes.

Changing your password

To change your password, select 'Change password' from the 'My passport applications' page.

Forgotten your password?

If you have forgotten your password, select 'reset your password' to verify identity and change your password. After you have entered your email address, you will be prompted to answer one of your secret questions.

If you have three unsuccessful attempts to answer the secret question, your account will be locked, and you’ll need to contact us on 131 232.

Once a question is successfully answered, we will email you a link to set up a new password.

Report a security breach of your AusPassport account

If you think your account may have been compromised (for example, if your security details have been, or may be, accessed by another person without your permission), reset your password as soon as possible and call on 131 232.

You may be required to provide us with information on:

  • when you believe your account was compromised and why you believe it has been compromised
  • your last access to your account
  • whether you have provided your security details (username or password) to someone else.

We will send you an email if your word or security questions are changed.
