Passport validity and foreign visas

Can I use my current passport until it expires?

Your current passport may still be valid when you apply for a new one. It will be cancelled on the date your new one is issued. Once you’ve applied for a new passport, the Australian Passport Office recommends you don’t travel outside Australia. This is because your current passport may be cancelled while you are overseas.

There are passport validity rules set by other countries and airlines that the Australian Government can’t change. Some countries won’t let you enter unless your passport is valid for six months after you leave that country. Some airlines also follow this rule and it may apply even if you’re just transiting or stopping over. The rule isn’t applied consistently by all countries and airlines. You may get different advice from different sources. If you get it wrong, you may be stranded overseas.

Check your passport’s expiry date before you travel. If you’re not sure it will be valid long enough, consider getting a new passport.

Can I use foreign visas from an old passport?

Many countries don’t accept visas that are in passports which are no longer valid.  You may have to get new visas.  Keep in mind that some visas are electronic, and there may be no physical evidence of them in your passport.

If you're planning to travel to the United States of America under the visa waiver program, you need to have a passport with an electronic chip. All current Australian passports, except emergency passports, have an electronic chip.
