Passport applications - general advice

I applied for my new passport weeks ago. Why is it taking so long to get it?

While every effort is made to process applications as quickly as possible, actual turnaround times are determined by the level of demand and other factors.

Since the reopening of Australia’s international border on 1 November 2021, the Australian Passport Office has been experiencing increased demand for new passports.

As a result, we’ve recommended to our customers that they allow up to six weeks to get a new passport.

Not all applications take six weeks to be processed. It depends on the type and complexity of the application

For example, because all supporting documents required as part of a first-time application need to be verified, this application type can sometimes take longer to process than a passport renewal application.

We also find delays occur when applicants don’t provide all the necessary information or haven’t met other requirements.

If you’re applying for the first-time, we’d therefore strongly recommend you don’t book your travel until you get your passport.

What if I need to travel urgently?

If you need to travel urgently, you may be able to use APO’s priority processing service when lodging your application.

For further information, please go to our urgent applications page.

My partner and I received our passports weeks ago. We lodged our kids' passport applications at the same time. How come we’re still waiting for theirs?

All passport applications are assessed individually and will be posted as soon as they are completed.

This means if you lodged multiple applications together, you may not receive the passports at the same time.

Child passport applications also have extra security checks and can often take longer to process.

My passport has been lost or stolen. What should I do?

If your passport has been lost or stolen, you must report this to us without delay.

Please phone us on 131 232 or contact your nearest Australian diplomatic or consular mission.

The moment you make a report, we will cancel your passport so it cannot be misused by anyone else.

You’ll have to get a new passport and pay the usual fee.

You should allow up to six weeks to get your new passport.

For more information, go to our lost and stolen passports page.
